We’ve probably all heard someone say, “Money is the root of all evil.” However, the actual verse says, “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.”
If we believe MONEY is the root of all evil, we are all in a lot of trouble because everyone uses money every single day. How could we ever hope to escape evil if that was the case?
Collin’s wife is fantastically frugal and a coupon queen. His wife saves them so much money, he thinks she is magic. She turns one meal into three, companies practically pay her to buy their products through coupons and rebates, and their stellar credit score saves them thousands each year with their low interest rates. Her magical ways amaze him.
But for his birthday, Collin felt like she pulled a skunk out of her hat instead of a rabbit. She gave Collin “a great bargain” for his special day and not what he had asked for and really wanted. He felt like “the deal” was more important to her than him.
Collin readily admits her magical savings techniques benefit their family, but he wishes she could refrain when it comes to special events in their life like birthdays and anniversaries. On those special days he wonders if she values her coupons more than their relationship.
Even positive money behaviors like saving, gift giving, risk taking, and budgeting can be taken to an extreme and harm the relationships around them. That‘s why the verse says not to prioritize the MONEY over the LOVE. “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.”
Are you in a relationship where money seems to magically rank higher than you? Tell us about it.
